Writing from Life

7th September 2008, Loma-Ann Marks

Although many people would agree that the phrase ‘never judge a book by its cover’ is integral to our moral understanding, I found myself having to reluctantly discard this age old adage the instant my eyes were affronted by Writing from Life, the latest in the series of ‘How to’ books, informative lessons on ‘how to’ do pretty much anything.

Writing from Life

With the offensively large title font and gaudy colour, I was immediately put off by its unappealing front cover.  Perhaps it was the accompanying promise that I found somewhat distasteful - ‘how to turn your personal experience into profitable prose’ -  placed too much emphasis on money over good writing (although I suppose the goal of this book is to help writers turn their words into cash.)
I wasn’t won over by author Lynne Hackles favourite motto either - ‘never let truth get in the way of entertainment’ - which is perfectly acceptable if you write gossip  (and even then there should be at least a grain of credibility)  but a book on ‘how to’ sell your soul?
But with these preconceptions and prejudices lurking in the back of my mind I, nonetheless, decided to give the book a fair go. Maybe I could learn something valuable, or indeed ‘profitable’, after all.  And, as it turns out, I did.

Using simple language for clarity and comprehension, the colloquial tone of this book creates the impression that the author is there with you every step of the way.  Writing From Life is interactive, involving the reader in various useful activities and exercises.  On finishing the book I was pleasantly surprised, feeling encouraged to pick up a pen and immerse myself in creativity.  Practical and inspiring, Writing From Life covers everything, from ‘real life’ stories to children’s books; Lynne Hackles teaches you how to make the most of your particular writing talent.
Although I generally believe that the inspiration to write should come from within, this book could certainly help dithering or nervous writers find the confidence to simply pick up a pen.  Writing from Life can help to uncover your individual niche, and with plenty of ideas to get you started, aspiring writers will soon be making money quicker than you can say ‘how to’.  Maybe the age old adage does rings true after all.
