Editor's Letter - A Free For All

One of Open’s main aims is to reflect how the arts increasingly fuse together and overlap to create new ways of seeing.

When it may seem that there are no truly new ideas left it’s fitting that art will marry up with fashion; film rub along next to music; literature go hand in hand with dance. And, more and more, what's happening in the arts is filtering to popular culture and they're feeding off each other.

This has always happened, to a certain extent, of course.

What’s different now is that they’re working together in a new way, informing each other: interlocking rather than just walking side by side.
Sigur Ros’ film Heima is an aural and visual feast that challenges all the conventions of the film score and band movie. Read our feature here.

One of our newest and most popular cultural icons, Russell Brand, pours scorn on the traditional image of masculinity and brings together an enigmatic blend of humour, intelligence, wordiness and sex appeal. We went to the book signing of his new autobiography My Booky Wook, to discover what makes him so appealing.

Even the Christmas lights are all arty, bringing together the childlike wonder at twinkling fairylights with huge, sculptural installations. Read our interview with Paul Dant, who designs some of London’s best displays.

And do keep up with our columnist Hayley Nolan in Diary of a Diva. The actress and playwright gives us a fortnightly diary into how she’s navigating her career in a world of celebrity, fame, image and being seen. It’s a fascinating and funny insight.
Until next week.
