Mister Lonely
A Michael Jackson impersonator, simply called Michael, busks on the streets of Paris. Marilyn Monroe’s ( Samantha Morton ) doppelganger notices and takes him to a Scotland castle - a haven for impersonators.
The community is self-sufficient and secluded from the rest of society
but its many fractures dramatically come to the surface, causing Michael to rethink his identity.
Meanwhile, in the South American jungle, a priest witnesses the miracle of a nun plummeting from his plane and landing unscathed. The event happens a few times, but apparently God’s patience has an end…
Back in Paris, Michael decides to forsake his persona to become himself again.
Let's start from Werner Herzog. His most impressive works, from Fitzcarraldo to Grizzly Man, mix poetry, anarchy and an infinite interest in the depth of man's soul.
Recently Herzog has found in Harmony Korine a disciple, a cinematographic stepson, to the point that he acts in all of Korine's films – including Mister Lonely in which he stars as the priest.
The sequences of the flying nuns, mixing unleashed fantasy and anti-religious cynicism are pure Herzog.
Nine years after Julien Donkey-Boy, Harmony Korine may no longer be as mad as a horse but his white-hot imagination is still there.
The core of this surreal and sometimes cruel film, dealing with issues including identity, escapism and desire, is summed up by the Queen Elizabeth II impersonator: “we are here to keep the spirit of wonder alive.”
Harmony Korine is no philosopher but enjoy his cinema, which enchants and exhilirates the audience, and reminds us that we can't escape our real selves.
