After all those infected with rage have died of starvation, it's time for reconstruction in London. The hyper-tech Isle of Dogs is the new home to the few survivors. Among them are Don, who escaped his refuge leaving his wife and friends at the mercy of the infected, and his children who were out on a trip while the UK got ravaged. An over-zealous NATO task force watches over the population, but when Don inconsiderately spreads the virus again, the soldiers kick off extermination. Army doctor Scarlett and sniper Doyle agree to protect Don's children who might be immune to the virus and therefore invaluable for research - but the mission is going to go horribly wrong. Whereas Danny Boyle's original was more of a road movie with monsters and touched important social issues including sex slavery, this superb and more horrific sequel features great action sequences: an infected-chopping helicopter, East London set on fire and Robert Carlyle in his best role for years: a coward and a liar who speaks with an incomprehensible accent when sane, then goes on a rampage and starts making sense. He finally meets his fate on a tube platform, in a masterful scene fraught with anthropologic topics. The rest of the characters are sympathetic enough to make you fidget on the edge of your seat whenever their lives are at risk - which is most of the time. But the main character here is East London: from the sleek architecture of Canary Wharf to a grimy Moorgate, the urban landscape suffers as well as the humans - getting battered beyond reason. A few plot holes don't affect the story, and the extremely realistic effects send a chill down the spine. Warning: don't take the tube right after watching the film. |
